So...was that it? was that Winter? Because I didn't even get to wear my coats and boots that much. It's a good thing I didn't buy another expensive pair of boots for the Winter or I'd be heartbroken. Oh well, at least is not so hot that I can't wear tights. Ladies I'm so proud of myself, when I bought these booties I knew they were exactly what I wanted (so it wasn't an impulse buy), I also waited patiently till they went on sale, and ever since I got them I've been wearing them almost every day. I feel good when I make a wise purchase. ^_-

DIY: Leather detail on denim jacket

It's been a long time since I've done a tutorial but I have one to share today. It is very easy to do, all you need is an old denim jacket and a piece of leather. I would suggest synthetic leather so you can wash it in the washing machine but I was very impatient, and I couldn't find a decent piece of synthetic leather at the thrift store so I went for leather instead.

Here's my jacket before...

The skirt only cost me $3 at the thrift store.

Draw a sketch of whatever you want to put on your jacket. I chose the dove b/c of the biblical meanings.

Cut out your sketch..

Trace with chalk

Pin in place, also mark where you are going to sew.

Once it's sewn cut out the front side of the jacket, leaving about 1/2 an inch for fraying.

This is how it looks once you cut the top part of the jacket.

Fray and it's done!

Total cost $3 bucks for the leather. I thought about doing the Mickey Mouse ears, that would have been cute too, but unfortunately, I'm well past my teens and 20's. ^-^

Today I had another outfit planned, but once I put it on it didn't look right, so with little time left I took out my trusty striped sweater and skirt; throw in some red lipstick and black tights and I'm ready to go. This weekend we had a swap with a couple of ladies from church, I took a bunch of stuff including cute heels that were just too high for me to walk in. I only got a homemade body scrub and a book out of the swap but I was glad to give my stuff away to someone that will use it. ^-^

The other day while my students were quietly working on their hand writing, our custodian entered our classroom to check the roof, followed by a very tall repair man, this guy was probably 7 feet tall! He even had to bend over to go through our regular sized door. One of my kids got up from his seat and loudly exclaimed "Wooow! He is bigger! He is bigger!" as he pointed to the guy. The repair guy chuckled at his comment and I tried not to stare so much; I had not seen such a tall person myself. ^-^ Ladies just when I think I'm running out of refashioning ideas my creative light bulb goes on, I can't wait to show you what I have in mind!

One of the moments I enjoy the most when I visit my mom is when she buys clothes for herself and she brings out all her finds and tells me all about the garment details and how she's going to tailor them. I think I get more excited than she does just by looking and listening to her. My mom loves little details and she's all about great fitting clothes. This weekend I tried to dye a shirt but I didn't follow the directions, they clearly stated not to dye 100% polyester but I ignored them. Needless to say, my shirt was ruined and the fuchsia dye wasted. Good thing I found this silk top at TJ Maxx on the sale rack. ^-^

If I could share one tip that makes clothes look better in an instant (or maybe not so instant), it would be to iron your clothes. I used to love to iron, but now I've gotten very lazy and my iron has been collecting dust, but it definitely helps the fabric and clothes look much better. Anyway, I hope I can follow my own advice more often, today I did iron my clothes. Here is what I wore to church. Have a happy Sunday!

Well hello there ladies! Today I want to show you a little refashion I whipped up in a few minutes, I bought this dress a while ago at a thrift store, and it waited in my refashion pile for over a month because I was indecisive on what to do with the sleeves. In the end I decided to chop them off, I also took in on the sides and cut the length. I'm very satisfied with the simplicity of this dress.

Hi ladies! Today I decided to wear vibrant colors again, not that I'm ready for Spring yet, no need to rush the allergy season, but they make me feel excited about my clothes. Today was a very important day for me, I was evaluated by my principal. Everything went smooth and I received a great appraisal score. However, every time I'm evaluated I get very nervous, so I made sure I wore something comfortable and breathable that would not show my sweat stains, no joke. The writing lesson I presented was about my favorite thing in the world (which was my sweater). I kind of made up a story that it had been a Christmas present from my mom many years ago and it was very special to me for that reason. In reality, I thrifted it last month and maybe there's nothing special about it other than I just liked the color a lot, but little kids like big stories just as much as I like vibrant colors. ^_^

Happy Sunday everyone! Has anyone seen the Beauty and the Beast in 3D? My friends and I went to see it last night, I was so hungry during the movie that it seemed to be the longest movie ever! However, it was fun to hear my friend sing to the lyrics. Yesterday I made the time to go to the thrift store, I hadn't been there in a couple of weeks and finally the thrifting gods smiled down on me. I found these booties along with other great things. Hi everyone! I want to thank you all for the encouraging comments on my last post, thank you so much! Today I have a refashion and a tailoring post. The first one is this cape I thrifted during the summer. I loved everything about it except the length, it was a few inches too long. Since I didn't want to ruin it I took it to my mom and she helped me shorten it. I wore it to school today and realized that maybe taking my lunch in a basket (which I do) while wearing a cape is not a good idea. Oh well, I've been called little red riding before (twice).

Doesn't look much of a difference but I shortened it about 4 inches, now it hits on my knees.

The second thing I wanted to show you is this skirt I thrifted 3 years ago. I was planning on doing my regular full skirt, but then I found this pattern and since peplums are coming back it seemed like a good idea to try it. The skirt was fairly easy to make, but the pattern does run a bit big.

Sunday Best: The velvet bolero

When my son saw my outfit today he said "mom you look like one of those torero people" he didn't like it, but I did. It's all about the little vintage bolero, the rest of the outfit was pretty simple, basic tee, black skirt, red lips and we're ready to go. You know, I really like dressing up on Sundays to go to church, it's one of my favorite days. However, the dress code at my church is very casual and almost everyone wears comfy clothes, except for the elder people. I've noticed I tend to overdress, the thing is, I'm very shy and I dislike standing out, no one really cares, but there is part of me that wonders whether I should dress more casual. I'm not wearing jeans to church any time soon, but it's been on my mind. Have you been in a similar situation? What are your thoughts? Hope to read your opinions. Have a great week everyone!

Wishing You A Happy New Year! (and a refashion)

This is my last refashion post of 2011, I'm on my way to a New Year's celebration party. This is what I'm wearing for the party, the top was actually a floor length dress I thrifted. It was so unflattering as a dress I almost didn't post the before picture because it shows my very rectangular body, but as a top it worked perfect! Without further ado here is my refashion, all I did was cut the length off and hem it, I also had to redo the waistline on my skirt since it fit too loose. MIP: A Year in Review

Two thousand eleven has definitely been a year of changes in my style. When I started blogging I tried copying many young blogger's styles and was all about trial and error. This year however I decided my style needed to grow-up a bit, after all there are cute outfits that look great on 20 year olds, but I'm way past my 20's and I needed something that made me feel like me, and not like someone else. So this is the year in review of Modesty is Pretty, hope you tag along! ^_^

January

This skirt proved to be a great purchase, I continued to wear it a lot throughout the year and I became obsessed with mustard. I also became more comfortable with mixing colors.

February

When I wore this. I loved this outfit although I felt a bit unsure about the collar (felt a bit childish), I have a fondness for peter pan collars.

I'm not much of a scarf wearer but I have tons of scarves, I liked this one very much, there are so many ways to wear scarves and add interest to your outfit.

March

This was the first skirt I ever made. It was made from leftover silk from some curtains my mom had made. I used this pattern, it is very easy to follow for those who are making a skirt for the first time.

I had wanted a pink skirt for the longest time, when I was unable to find it, I bought a regular vintage skirt and refashioned it into something I wanted. I made the scallops for the first time and I loved them.

April

I saw a skirt at Anthropologie just like this one but theirs was very unflattering on me and had an elastic waist (which I dislike) so I refashioned a white dress and made my own version.

I often wear long sleeves even though I dislike them, but I do like the way rolled sleeves look.

May

When I saw all the 70's inspired looks in magazines I thought I would never try it because I disliked 70's fashion, then I found this dress and boots. I'm still not a big fan of that fashion decade, but I won't say no to it anymore.

June

Classic! Can't go wrong with classic, I wore this to my nephew's high school graduation.

I thrifted this dress because I loved the green color, bright colors make me happy. I tailored the sleeves and the length of the dress to fit me.

This outfit was inspired (copied) from a blogger I follow, I had thought about refashioning this skirt, but some things are better left alone.

July

July is one of the hottest months here in Texas! It was torture but this necklace made me want to get dressed. I bought it at Anthro for $30 bucks because it was broken, but that has never stopped me, I bought it, fixed it and I wore it a lot of times.

I'm a big fan a crocheted garments, I have had this top for a couple of years and never got around to wear it because it's rather bulky, I figured belting it was the only way I could wear it, and I was right.

August

When I bought this skirt I was a bit nervous about the length but thanks to supportive comments I got over it and it turned out to be one of my favorite skirts during the summer.

The top is one of my favorites too, it was a boring off white shade, once I dyed it I wore it a lot.

September

I have a fondness for 1950's looks.

Another 60's dress I thrifted, 60's dresses made me change my mind about shift dresses, they are very flattering.

October

This ModCloth skirt fits perfect, I highly recommend it, it's a semi-full skirt so that it's not overwhelming on your hips.

The outfit is perfectly preppy, just the way I like it. I have this thing for uniform inspired looks too.

November

When I thrifted this jacked I knew it would be the perfect jacket for the Fall, my favorite season.

I loved combining sequins and ruffles in this outfit, V-necks are very flattering to short necks.

Curvy girls I have always admired your curves, this outfit gave the illusion of curves and I loved it.

December

I wore make up and my red dress, I loved how the make-up looked, however I won't wear it everyday. Natural is beautiful too.

One of the things I have noticed in my blog is that I wear a lot of stripes and plaids, so I combined my two favorite prints.

And the last change of the year, I took a plunge into skinny jeans, I'm definitely going to wear them more often, I really like them but I never found a pair that fit, that is, until I learned how easy it is to tailor them.

Ladies thank you all so much for staying with me this year, and for always being encouraging with your comments. When I started blogging, I didn't have any idea of what kind of style I liked. With time though, I've learned to dress in a way that makes me happy and comfortable, but all your kind and encouraging comments, and constructive criticism have helped along the way. I look forward to next year, and I'm excited to see what other things and changes it will bring. ^_^

I don't know if you've noticed but I'm not much of a jeans wearer, I love skirts and dresses because they make me feel very feminine. However, I was curious about skinny jeans so I bought this pair of boot-cut, corduroy, jeans at the thrift store and I used this tutorial to make them into skinny jeans. To keep things modest I wore a loose top and a long sweater. I think it worked really well, I especially liked wearing these jeans with my vintage boots. Next time I'll try a blazer.

Ladies, breathe! We're almost there! A few days 'till Christmas. I think I have my Christmas shopping done, I just need to wrap a few things. The embarrassing thing is I haven't put up my Christmas tree, yeap you read it right. I'm such a procrastinator when it comes to putting up the tree, last week my friend squad wanted to come over to help me decorate but I had to cancel on them because I was so busy and exhausted after work. A few weeks ago while I was browsing at F21, I saw a LBD with a peter pan collar that I really liked, however, the fit was too baggy so I didn't buy it. Days later I went to the thrift store and found this dress, very similar to the one I had seen at F21, except it didn't have a peter pan collar, not a problem for me! I bought an old velvet shirt and sewed my own little collar and voila! I have a better fitting version of the F21 dress for much much less.

Although this is not a refashion post per se, I wanted to show you what tailoring can do to clothes. I bought this coat for $1.75 at the thrift store outlet, however it was very long, and long coats can make you look shorter. I loved the shape of the coat, the color and the collar so it came home with me. After a good dry clean it hanged in my closet for more than a year, I almost re-donated it again! My mom helped me measure the length of the coat and I cut it, hemmed it and did the same for the lining.

My grandmother always saved her best for especial occasions, whether it was her dinnerware or her shoes, she stored and put them away to use only on special ocassions. I, on the other hand, try to use and enjoy my best as much as possible. Especially when it comes to clothes, your best can make you feel good even on the gloomiest days. This red dress is one of my best, it's also one of the most expensive dresses I've bought (at $75, three years ago) well worth it. Every time I wear it, it makes me feel so dainty and lady-like.

Today we put up our Christmas tree in my classroom, my kids watched with delight as I carefully took out Christmas decorations and ornaments, they were very excited when it was finally done. And now it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I need to do that at home this weekend, no excuses! One more year almost gone can you believe that? When did time start flying by? I still remember when I was little and it took forever to turn 12.

Today I got my hair cut, sometimes my hair stylist gets it right and others she doesn't, this time she got it right, I liked my haircut. Their smile of satisfaction after reading their first word and their many wonderful and honest compliments. We teachers, don't make enough enough, but we do take moments in the life of those children that are worth more than money could buy.

For years I have tried to stay away from flowy tops, I rather wear something fitted that I can tuck in. However, a few weeks ago I saw this flowy tunic at TJ Maxx on the clearance rack (with a small tear) and I just couldn't help myself, it came home with me and I fixed it. I love the bottom detail of the tunic, it reminds me of my beloved Mexico's papel picado that is used as a holiday decoration. I know the outfit adds pounds and I probably look pregnant from the side but I felt really good in this outfit and I didn't have to worry about being bloated either. ^_^

See the similarity? It brings nostalgic memories of my childhood in Mexico.

However, because I cannot afford a $367.99 dress and I don't see ModCloth sending it my way any time soon, I had to take matters into my own hands. Today I almost had a "heart attack" at work when a teary, but not worried, little boy came to me and said "Teacher I had had this up my nose all day long" showing me a piece of a pencil's eraser, "I just got it out when I blew my nose" (!!!). I'm so glad he was alright, he didn't tell me anything until the end of the day. I made sure we turned that into a learning lesson: Never put anything inside your nose. Now that I think about it, it was actually pretty funny. It reminded me of me when I was 5 years old and stuck a bean up my nose and then we couldn't get it out so my mom had to take it out with some tweezers.

Jewelry lovers be proud of me, I thrifted this silver necklace for $2.99, it was dirty and sticky and the hook was broken, nothing too challenging for this refashionista.

I love Laura Ashley's dresses, they are good refashioning material and LA knows how to pick quality fabric and nice prints. This is the third Laura Ashley dress I've refashioned (see here and here). I picked up this dress at the thrift store for .25 cents, great deal! I almost left it behind, I'm so glad I didn't, the fabric is black corduroy. For this refashion I took off the shoulder pads, took in on the sides, sleeves and shoulders, I shortened the length and made the sleeves 3/4. I love the new dress, it looks like a 50's dress. I wore it today for our Thanksgiving dinner. It fit just right so there was no room for to me indulge in gluttony which is a good thing, last year I had a real bad indigestion after our Thanksgiving dinner. ^_^

DIY: Elongate a tight fabric belt

One problem I often have when I'm thrifting is that most vintage things I find are too small for me. That, however, doesn't stop me from buying it if I like it a lot and I can figure out a way to make it work. Today I was lucky to find this vintage belt, however it was too small for me, I tried sucking in my gut but still no luck, after much thought my creative light bulb went on and I got an idea on how to make this pretty belt fit me.

Here is the before...oh so tight.

First I took the loop off.

Then I got some canvas fabric I had around, measured and cut it to the width of the belt.

I ironed fusible interface to the canvas fabric for extra sturdiness. Here it is already stitched and ironed.

I put the end of the belt inside the extension.

Sewed it together...

I put the belt loop back on and sewed it closed.

And now I have a belt that fits.

Soon to be refashioned...

Getting ready for the turkey anyone? I'm enjoying my days off from work and I'm so grateful to have a job where I can have the whole Thanksgiving week off. ^_^ Yesterday I volunteered, along with some friends, to decorate the east wing of our church, we decorated the Christmas tree and entrance, it was fun. Tonight I'm volunteering to decorate our church's gym for Thursday's apartment ministry, Thanksgiving dinner. In between I'm trying to get as much sewing and thrifting as I can, I found some good stuff today. Gotta stay busy!

It's been raining and cooling down a bit, I'm glad I bought these boot liners, they are very warm and they don't make your feet sweaty.

Last night I had some time on my hands so I decided to refashion this vintage skirt I bought at the thrift store, I paid $2.99 for it, it was a bit stiff but after washing it it was fine. The fabric is beautiful and the color is perfect for my favorite season (Fall!). For this skirt I made 4 pleats on each side, I also gathered the fabric in the middle and back section for some fullness and shortened it.

Last night I started working on this skirt while we watched a movie, I think it's the best time to refashion because I get to watch a movie and relax as I stitch away, the mushroom and the hem took a while since I did it by hand, but it was worth it, there is nothing I dislike more than an ill-made refashion. I also sewed a new waistline because the original one was too tight on me. I love how how cute the skirt came out, I hadn't thought about adding the mushroom till the last moment, I was thinking of the Smurfs cartoon that I used to love watching when I was little.

I love faux pearls as much as I love chocolate, I'd love real pearls too but I can't afford them hehe. These last weeks have been pretty tough, being a mother of a pre-teen is not an easy task, teenage years are tough, or so I've heard. 60's kind of girl

Hi everyone I'm back! So one of the most important updates for me is that I joined a Healthy Lifestyle group at work, last year our district contracted a nutrition group to help us lose those extra pounds, everyone that joined at my campus last year did so good I was inspired to join. Two weeks ago we had to eat from a very restricted cleansing diet, I was so glad that was over. Since I came back from Mexico I've lost 8 pounds, I'm super excited about that. I won't lie, it has been hard because I have a sweet tooth and well a starch tooth as well and we have been reducing the amount of starch in our diet. I have 13 more pounds of fat to lose to get to my target body fat of 28% I hope I can do it. I had never done diets because I dreaded them but doing it as a group with coworkers makes it much easier because we are all constantly encouraging each other. I love working at my school.
Anyways I am working on a refashion bur for today I leave you with what I wore yesterday, I thrifted this vintage dress at the beginning of the Summer. Fall could not get here fast enough, I love Fall and Winter, now the only thing is the temperatures, dear God can we please go below 90's? ^_^

Hi! I hope everyone had a peaceful weekend. Today I wanted to show you 5 outfits remixing one dress. Since I came back from Mexico I have been more careful about my shopping habits, I have not spent every weekend at the thrift stores because, honestly, I don't have the money. I thrifted this dress two years ago for $1.75, it was a couple of sizes too big, at that time I wasn't comfortable with refashioning yet so I asked my talented mother to "help" me, she did all the work herself I only helped to hem. I'm wearing a petticoat underneath for extra poof.

Hello everybody! Today was a great day at work, the highlight of the day happened outside in the playground, two of my little ones decided not to follow the rules today so they had to sit in time out during recess, suddenly we saw the BIG fifth graders run by to get in line, one of the boys, tough-looking 5th grader with a mohawk, ran towards us, I knew he was my little one's older brother, they look just alike and the older brother was also in my kindergarten class 5 years ago. I thought he was going to ask why his little brother was in time out, but instead he just leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek and then continued along his way, aw! it just melted my heart, totally unexpected. ^_^

I love the idea of wearing faux pearls a'la Jackie, hidden behind the garment.

Happy Sunday everyone! First of all I wanted to thank you for the always encouraging comments, since I started this blog I have never received but kind comments I feel so blessed, thank you all.

Last night I was thinking about what to wear to church, this outfit came to mind because I've had this skirt for months and I had not worn it yet. I bought it before I left to Mexico, it used to be a bit tight on the waist but for the last 3 weeks I've been training to run 10 K and I've lost some body fat the scale is still on the same number but now my skirt fits just perfect and I feel a lot stronger. This is what I wore to church today.

My friend who retired gave me this mechanical watch, it belonged to her granny. It didn't work but when I went to Mexico I took it with me and got it repaired for $23 dollars. It's beautiful, the stones are deep emerald but the flash made them faint green.

Today's refashion waited patiently in my closet to be worn, I wasn't happy with the very yellow outcome but after seeing Mrs. J rock her yellow shirt I changed my mind and even more so when I wore it to Anthropologie today and I got compliments on it, so I've decided I'm going to leave it as it is (I was planning to fade the color a bit). Hope everyone is enjoying this Sunday, it was good to go back to our church, I've really missed it. Yesterday was a movie night at my friends house, we took pizza and had a delightful time at her place. Using an SLR camera is a bit challenging for a tech-impaired girl like me, even more so when at the same time I'm trying to learn how to use the Macbook Pro, I had never owned a Mac before. I have not been able to use my camera for self shots yet, they all come out blurry and dark, in the meanwhile I'll stick to my old camera. Using the SLR also proved to be a bit challenging for my friends, all the pictures they took of me came out blurry. It will take me some time to learn how to use the camera indeed.

Hi Ladies I'm back, today I wanted to share some of the pictures I took during my vacation. These pictures show why my heart belongs to Puebla, Mexico. It is an amazing place among the mountains where magic happens for me every time I visit. Before I left on vacation I bought me a SLR camera, I didn't read the instructions I just charged the battery and started shooting, hopefully I'll make time to read through my manual so I can take better pictures.

This first picture is of my granny's house, she passed away many years ago but her house brings me fond memories of my childhood and of her. I remember she was always after us for cutting out the flowers in her garden, my cousins and I would make-believe that flowers were our dolls and the garden was their home in the jungle. I love those memories.

This was the view from my room, I could spend hours just looking at the beautiful view, specially when it rained, rain is very calming to me. July in Zacapoaxtla, Puebla (where I stayed) is the rainy season.

My sweet niece, I love the innocence of small town children.

My son who loved this street-dog, street dogs are very common in Zacapoaxtla.

My dad and I at a seafood restaurant, one of the things I noticed is how cheap food is in Mexico. That day I had eaten so much I was not able to order anything, I wish I had though, now I'm hungry for some mexican seafood.

This man was playing an aztec tune on his flute in Puebla, I don't know who the lady is she just got in the way before I could snap the picture.

The architecture is Puebla is just breathtaking. It was a rainy but that didn't stop me from snapping some pictures.

My cousin and her daughter, we visited Puebla together, she's my best friend. We stopped by a restaurant hidden in this old building, the place looked more like a museum than a restaurant and the food (mole poblano) was delicious.

Some guys playing the marimba (kind of looks like a xylophone). This was also in downtown Puebla.

My cousin and her daughters, we made a little safari trip.

This little alley had about 150 steps, we had top go up the steps everyday to go...anywhere! No wonder I stayed in shape. Again this is in Zacapoaxtla, Puebla.

After the steps there was this beautiful orange-red building, my favorite color. It's the small town's main auditorium where some of the big events take place.

This is Zacapoaxtla's main park, when I was in high school my friends and I would walk around it every night after school, the park has changed though, many years ago it had huge trees which were later cut down.

My cousin on an early morning on our way to the gym, we were late for our class and it was full so I took the time to take some more pictures, she made a joke that this picture should be called "the girl thinking about getting a beer" because of the beer sign next to her hehehe, she doesn't drink.

Well hello there pretty ladies, I'm back home again...not very excited about that. I will definitely miss the cool weather, beautiful mountains and amazing people. This morning I could not get dressed, this heat is too much. Summer is my least favorite season. In the end I did manage to get dressed to run some errands, I have so much stuff to catch up on, including my favorite reads. These three weeks without thinking about outfits or shopping were amazing. I will post pictures of my trip a soon as I figure out my new camera.

Hi lovely ladies! I´ve been super busy these days enjoying the time with friends and loved ones and just loving every moment I spend here at home. So unfashionable of me in my workout clothes, I'm at the little market in my town. That morning I went for a harsh workout with my cousin and then stopped by a little place to get a fresh squeezed juice, it was great. These days fashion and outfits have not been a priority, it feels good to get up in the morning and not worrying about what to wear, life is simple and very good. I'll be back to Texas Saturday, I'll post more pictures then. Hope everyone is staying cool in that hot weather, I´ve enjoyed 60 degree weather here, it´s wonderful.

Refashion: Goldfield Inspired Skirt & I'll be back after a break

Hi pretty ladies! Today I brought you a last refashion for now, my son and I will be going on vacation to Puebla, Mexico for 3 weeks (that's where I grew up). I'm very excited and in much need of some fun with friends and family. One of the things I'm mostly excited about is the beautiful cold weather, I'm cold natured and this heat in Texas is unbearable. My cousin told me it's raining a lot and it's cold, so I'll be packing my rain boots and a coat. I didn't leave any pre-typed posts or guest blogger posts, I don't like those, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to post as frequent since I'm going to be traveling a lot and many times without internet. Hi ladies! I hope everyone enjoys this wonderful day, I bet most of you are going to watch fireworks and grill outside huh? That makes me hungry, very hungry for meat. My son went to sleep over at his cousin's so that leaves me solo, the good thing is that friends at church planned a BBQ grill party so I won't have to spend the evening alone and I can eat lots of grilled goodies, my stomach is growling already. July has begun and the temperatures have risen, for days like these I like to keep it simple, the less layers the better, this linen wrap dress does the trick. I bought it at Gap 3 years ago, it was misplaced in the maternity section and it was down to $10 bucks, can't beat a deal like that. Have a happy 4th of July!

Hi pretty ladies! Today I went to the thrift store and found these cute shoes (Simply Vera, Vera Wang), I could not leave them behind. My shoe shopping has gotten out of control again, it happens every summer. I've bought shoes and returned them and then bought some more. I didn't need this pair but it was cute, I liked them a lot and they were only $9.57. Tonight we are going to the movies downtown, they have the screen set outside and people bring their lawn chairs and snacks and just enjoy the movie, it's really cool. I hope everyone has a great end of week!

My favorite part of the shoe is the plastic ombre heel and the tulle bow.

Happy Sunday beautiful lades! My outfit seems so patriotic today, red, blue and white, it was totally unintentional. This morning I was feeling a bit down because of a critic a 'friend' made of me, he criticized my body and the way I dress, I felt a bit discouraged and all these insecurities started coming back. I'm glad I seeked God because He helped me realize that words from a person do not define who I am and whatever my flaws are God loves me the same, unconditionally. After a while the guy's words stopped stinging and I felt much better. People will criticize you (maybe unintentionally) but you make the decision as to whether you let those words define you. Have you ever been in the same situation? How did you handle it? I'd love to hear from you. This was today's outfit for church, my son gave me the beautiful flower after his Sunday school class, flowers always make my day. ^_^

DIY: Marni Inspired Necklace

Finally a tutorial ladies, I hope you are all ready to make this necklace, it was very easy to make. Hope you enjoy!

Here is what you need:

felt fabric

old pins

glue gun

scissors

chalk

paper & pencil

scissors

needle & thread

ribbon

1. Start by tracing your bib pattern on a piece of paper, once you cut it out try it on to see if you got the desired shape or need to make adjustments.

2. Once you cut your pattern arrange the pins over it to give you an idea of how you are going to glue them.

3. Trace your pattern on the felt fabric and cut.

4. Again check to see if it will fit perfectly around your neck. The other day I tried a bib necklace at Target and it was too narrow for my neck, it looked bad.

5. I added bits of extra felt fabric at the back of where each pin would be glued and pinned, this was because the pins are heavy and the weight can make your necklace look very droopy, you can either do this step or cut 2 pieces of the bib pattern and sew them together which would have been a better option but I didn't think about it earlier.

6. Pin the brooches, make sure there is not sagging or distortion of the fabric.

7. Once all the brooches (pins) are pinned glue some corners of the pins for more stability, I also added a few invisible stitches here and there.

8. Glue ribbon to the ends...

9. Don't be stingy with the glue as the necklace can be a bit heavy. To make sure the ribbon ends are hidden you can add a little piece of felt over it.

Voila! Your necklace is done! Let me know if you make it so I can post your version here.

Refashion: from cream to orange

This top has been one of my favorite tops for many summers (even though it's missing some beads). The only "but" was the color, it was a bit blah so I dyed it using Rye Tangerine Orange. I should have done this earlier, the beads pop out and I think the top looks way better in orange, but then again orange is my favorite color so I might be a little bit biased. As far as the missing beads, a linen blazer over it will do and no one will ever know, just you but I'm counting on you to keep my secret. ^_-

Getting dressed these days has been a drag, I'm living in gym clothes since I spend quite a long time working out, that's how I stay busy these days. I wanted to show you these boots I thrifted Saturday. They were only $8.99, they are men's but you'll only know because I told you. The size said 7.5 so I put them down (thinking they were women's) then I went back and tried them on, nothing to loose if they didn't fit, just a little heart break right? Well lucky me they fit and once I put them in my basket I didn't let go, a girl tried peeking and I growled like a dog with a bone (okay I didn't but I wanted to). Back in my teenage years I was dying to have boots like these, with the chain under the heel. They are the definition of cool to me. ^_^

Pencil skirts are fabulous but I usually stay away from them because I feel I have to always suck in my mommy-tummy when I wear them. However, I think the pleating and front detailing of this skirt is very forgiving to the fluffy section. This is what I wore to church today, I had to tuck in the shirt because it was way too long, I'm not sure if it worked but oh well! My relationship with lipstick

At the age of 5 I disliked the marks lipstick left on my cheek, unless it was from my mom, then I would rub it off my face once I thought she wasn't looking.

At the age of 6 when my parents split I missed my mom's lipstick on my cheek and would love to see it on her letters.

At 8 there was this teacher who scared me because she wore so much of it, her make-up was scary.

At age 10 I loved the way my Barbie's lips would turn bright red if I put ice on them.

At 12 my mom allowed me to wear a sheer pink lip tint, I was no longer a little girl.

At 13 I was a teen! At school everyone wore their reddest lipstick, my sister bought a red lipstick she would wipe off before we got home, I tried it but it made my teeth look yellow so I went for pink.

At 15 I discovered cinnamon shades after my best friend told me where she bought hers for 8 pesos (75 cents) at the town's market.

At 18 I discovered Bilstex Lip Tone in Nuevo Laredo, MX. I still use it to this day.

At 20 my boyfriend always wiped off my lipstick with his fingers so I switched to tinted lip balm, I tried the flavored one too.

At 29 I followed certain religious dress guidelines so I stopped using make-up altogether and discovered Burt's bees lip balm, love it's tingling.

I'm 32 and I'm wearing a bright orange shade, I like it, it makes me giggle every time I catch myself in a mirror, I feel like that 13 year old who could get in trouble if she's caught wearing such "scandalous" shade. My son hates it, I chase him around the house to give him a kiss and we both laugh. I'm happy.

Hey there ladies! Today I did a refashion on this old white t-shirt. This summer I want to make it a challenge to wear more color up top, I love my white tops but I need some color. This was a fast refashion, except for the rosettes, they were a bit time-consuming to sew.

I used two old tees, one to make the rosettes.

I cut about 1 inch strips from the other tee and coiled them and pinned them in place.

I kind of liked the white version but I need color and not another white shirt. I had this Rye dye in royal blue.

Here's the result. I'm pretty pleased with the color, I was afraid it was going to be too dark.

My eyes look different because I've been using eye-liner, I'm not used to it but I like how it brings out my eyes.

After 2.5 weeks with no luck at the thrift store I found something worth buying. There are times when thrift stores seem over picked but yesterday I found these espadrilles, this skirt and a cape made in Spain that runs for $667 dollars, I got it for $10.99. I know there's girls that say that you shouldn't look at the brand but hey, when I find something cute that I could never afford at original price for $10.99 I feel I'm entitled to share the excitement (a.k.a. brag). While I was taking pictures I heard some munching, I turned around and who do I see? Jingles munching on my plant!

Well! I needed a good bath after all that painting! I feel rejuvenated. One of the smart buys this summer has definitely been in the shoe department. I bought my pointy red pumps, which I wear all the time, I also bought a pair of nude pumps and these platform sandals that I can't stop wearing. I feel good when I make a smart purchase. Ladies the end of school came and went and I'm glad it did. Today I have a few errands to run and I've also volunteered to work at the summer camp at my church. This summer I plan to save a bit more, I've tried working on my spending budget but rarely talk about saving. As a blogger you can easily end up over-spending, you see nice things and you want to go buy them too. I've done it many times, but it's not a good habit. So today I want to encourage us to save more and make wiser choices with our money.

I often wonder what's the real person like (money-wise) behind the blog, does she make enough money to pay for her bills? How's her credit score? Is she saving as much as she's spending? Has she ever had an overdraft? How much does she make to be able to afford all that spending a month? Does she have a retirement savings fund? Many questions that are none my business but I do wonder about that.

I want to encourage you to think about where you put your money. We've already had our guilt trips about spending too much and having to many clothes and shoes in our closet so let's get over it and start thinking wisely. Summer is one of the hardest seasons for me because I'm at home all the time, so I get bored and I want to go shopping. Last year I spent twice my shopping budget and at the end of summer I felt overwhelmed with clothes and guilt from having spent so much.

The lawn is thirsty

I wish my lawn stayed green without having to water it. In fact, the lawn was one of the reasons stopping me from buying a house a few years ago. I didn't want to have to deal with it. I don't own a lawn mower thanks to my kind neighbor who mows it for us and hopefully my son will be taking over that chore soon. The only plant I have is a chili plant my mom gave me, it was in a terracotta pot that broke under the water faucet, I left it there and now it's rooted (thank goodness for that or it would never get watered). Well today after church I saw my neighbor had left me a message on my sidewalk, it was written in bright yellow chalk and it said "THE LAWN IS THIRSTY" (=P). I feel a little guilty so I will try to water it once in a while, but I won't promise it will be as green as my dress.

Today we're heading off to my nephew's high school graduation! The only but is the other 799 students who are going to be graduating, it's going to be a long day. But I'm very happy for my nephew because he is such a great kid and his next step is college, I'm sure his parents are so proud of him, we are. Little kids love band-aids, they will squeeze their little fingers out and scratch old scars just to get a tiny drop of blood out so they can get a band-aid. I had two students with minor cuts (paper cut and scar) so I gave them band-aids, by the time I was done with them I had 6 more waiting in line to get a band-aid, some tried to convince me that their dirt stain was actually blood. The interesting thing is that my band-aids are regular nude ones, no fancy pictures. I can't imagine how many "injured" children I would have if I had Clifford or Dora band-aids! This is what I wore to work today, do you remember the song Sail Away by Enya? I can't get it out of my head today.

Dear ladies thank you so much for your suggestions on the last post. Some of you suggested shortening the dress, which is a great idea. I also agree on the sleeves being too retro, so I will shorten them also. It will be one of my summer refashion projects once school is over. Today I wore the blue vintage dress again with a different hair style and necklace, I got many compliments at work and my students applauded after I modeled it to them (hehehe the good thing about working with little ones is that you can get away with being silly) my kids are so sweet! I'm going to be so sad to see them go, this was one of the best classes I've had so far.

I love these platform sandals, they make me look almost 6 feet tall, I love feeling taller. I can't believe I just said that, back in high school (in Mexico) I used to be bullied for being tall; the average woman is 5"1', I'm 5"6'.

This outfit makes me look so much like my mom. ^_^

70's dresses updated

I've been hiding this 70's dress in my closet since last year, I only wore it once and then I put it away. It's a very nice cotton dress but I'm not sure whether I like it on me. When I put it on I can't stop thinking that it looks like I have on a gigantic sheet, but still it's too nice to toss it out so it's been patiently hanging in my closet.

Update: After much thought I changed my mind and changed into this pretty polka dotted drss I thrifted Saturday at Goodwill, don't go running there, I took them all (just kidding). I did find 4 amazing dresses, 3 for me and 1 for a sweet co-worker that loves vintage as much as I do. I hope she likes it.

Ladies I assure you there is a full slip under this dress, that's not my bra. I think the flash made it see-through in real life you can't see my slip.

That day I went to four thrift stores and left empty handed from 3, it wasn't until the last thrift store that I rarely visit that I found the dresses. Sometimes it's good to visit those thrift stores that you usually skip.

Today I volunteered to be with the babies in the nursery at church. I was expecting little babies but they put me in the 18 month-old room instead. It wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be, maybe because they're not yet talking but I did have a little girl fall asleep in my arms and she made up for the boring morning. I love when little ones fall asleep in my arms, she just hugged me and fell asleep immediately. I decided to wear something comfortable and no jewelry that they could pull off. Oh and I'm sure glad I wore a dark bottom, one lady wore white jeans and a little girl had a poopy leak on her jeans! She handled it with grace though, so I learned a lesson. After church my son and I stopped by 7 eleven for a coke and a hot dog, those things are addictive. ^_^
